SONYA YONCHEVA

Soprano

International diva Sonya Yoncheva begins musical studies in her early childhood, graduating with piano and voice under the guidance of first vocal teacher Nelly Koitcheva. Sonya obtains her master’s degree with beloved tutor and friend Danielle Borst at the Geneva conservatory, where William Christie discovers her extraordinary musicality and gift for baroque music.

Already as a student, she becomes a member of the Geneva opera chorus where she gains invaluable experience of music as co-creation of individual talents, before launching on the risky path of solo career. Her courage is quickly rewarded by the first prize and the special CultureArte prize of Placido Domingo’s Operalia in 2010, which puts her firmly on the path to international stardom, conquering the greatest stages all over the world. With inimitable brio Sonya embodies Poppea, Violetta, Mimì, Lucia di Lamermoor, Desdemona, Manon Lescaut, Iolanta, Luisa Miller, Marguerite, Imogene (Il pirata)… Gradually her tessiture evolves to highly dramatic roles such as Medea, Norma, Elizabeth de Valois, Fedora, Tosca, Ciò-Ciò-San, while allowing her to maintain a special focus on Early and Baroque repertory.

At the height of her career, Sonya is increasingly concerned about the future of opera and transmitting the humanistic values of art to the coming generations. With this purpose in mind, she has started developing an activity as a producer, bringing forth international stars such as Placido Domingo as well as prominent younger talents.
