SONYA YONCHEVA IN "NORMA" – FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BULGARIA!
On June 18, the ancient forum will become the perfect setting for one of the most beautiful love stories of the opera world—Bellini's masterpiece Norma, a signature role for Sonya Yoncheva on the world’s greatest stages. A tale of duty and the trials of love, this opera has left an indelible mark on generations of opera lovers with its mesmerizing melodies and captivating plot. A rarely performed and highly demanding gem in the operatic repertoire.
"For the first time, you will see me also as the director of this semi-staged production. I will present my vision of how I imagine my heroine and opera as an art form in the 21st century—not through elaborate sets and costumes, but as a minimalist concentration of voice, presence, and emotion," says Yoncheva.
It was in the role of Norma that Sonya Yoncheva caused a worldwide sensation when she opened the season at the Royal Opera House in London in 2016. Her acclaimed performances continued at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (2022), the Metropolitan Opera in New York (2023), and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (2024). Now, Plovdiv will stand proudly among these prestigious venues—perhaps even surpassing them in emotion and artistic splendor!
The production of Norma is supported by the Municipality of Plovdiv, with musical accompaniment conducted by maestro Krastin Nastev, leading the choir and orchestra of the State Opera Plovdiv.
